4 people have been killed, 2 others injured and 12 others missing after a heavy downpour in the city of Foping, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, during the weekend.

The torrential rains, lasting from Sunday night till Monday morning, have affected nearly 20 thousand locals, with 4381 of them evacuated.

The downpour, with a maximum rainfall of over 200 millimeters, has also caused a direct economic loss to the county of nearly 170 million yuan, or some 27 million U.S. dollars.

Hundreds of houses have been seriously damaged by the rain and dozens of them have collapsed, with power and communications severely disrupted in many townships in the region.

The situation is most serious in the township of Yueba, where its communications have been cut off for 42 hours until last night.

According to a local official, mudslides have occurred in many parts of the township, causing serious destructions in many homes and public places.

The heavy downpour has caused serious floods in 7 cities in Shaanxi Province, killing 4 people and causing an economic loss of over 900 million yuan, or 145 million U.S. dollars.

Meantime, a local county official, Du Xiaoyun remained missing four days after his car was swept out by floods while he was on an inspection tour of the disaster situation in one of the villages on Saturday.

Rescue work is still going on.
