Workers of China Harbor Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) saved lives of two Guinean fishermen on Monday in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Speaking to Xinhua at his work station along Boulbinet port, Moussa Bangoura, one of the fishermen who was rescued, said their small boat was sinking because of strong winds caused by the waves brought about by two industrial fishing boats. Without lifejackets and no means to call for help, the two fishermen stayed on the sinking boat for hours without getting any assistance from Conakry. This is the time when CHEC workers were taking their lunchtime break. They soon spotted the two fishermen struggling to save their lives. Informed about the incident, managers of the Chinese company asked three employees including a Chinese national to rush to rescue the fishermen. "Without the rapid and effective intervention by the Chinese workers, we would have died in the sea," Bangoura said. The national coordinator for Guinea's dock workers Fadjiwa Soumah later visited CHEC offices and thanked the company for rescuing the fishermen. "When I see a Chinese company saving the lives of our fellow citizens, I feel very happy," the coordinator said. Speaking to Xinhua on Tuesday, a CHEC official, Mr. Guo, said as a big company, CHEC has a social responsibility vis-a-vis the communities where it operates. "Our work is linked to the sea and our employees have the necessary expertise and skills to rescue people in danger," Guo said. CHEC is currently engaged in the work to extend the Conakry container terminal and construction of Forecariah deep water port in southern Guinea. |
