Premier Li Keqiang and his Ethiopian counterpart, Hailemariam Desalegn attended a ceremony marking the completion of the first phase of a highway linking Adis Ababa and Ethiopia’s second largest city of Adama.

The 78-kilometer-long highway was constructed by Chinese enterprises using Chinese technology and standards.

Premier Li said he’s impressed with the rapid development of Ethiopia’s infrastructure, and noted that Chinese companies have helped create jobs for local people.

He said Chinese investment in African countries should not only concentrate on high-profile infrastructure projects, but also include projects that train local employees and promote local employment. He urged Chinese enterprises in African countries to obey local laws, respect customs and protect the environment.

The two leaders also visited an industrial zone where 19 Chinese enterprises have set up operations. Li talked to Ethiopian workers there who told the premier their lives have improved since they found work at the industrial zone. Premier Li said creating more jobs for local workers will better serve people from both countries.
