Our Hollywood reporter Kristie Hang was on the red carpet for all the build-up and buzz around the awards earlier. Let's hear some of the star's thoughts on this night of celebration. Because of its relaxed attitude, some refer to the Golden Globes as Oscar's ruder, cruder, and boozier cousin. And without categories audiences don't care about, the Golden Globes double the number of celebrity acceptance speeches by creating separate categories for comedies and dramas in both television and film. And this all starts with the hyper energetic red carpet.
On this red carpet Hollywood's biggest celebrities will be showing up and showing off. 2013 has given audiences some memorable performances and it's here that one thing is guaranteed: there will be so many shiny stars and you may have to wear sunglasses. One distinguishing fact of this year's nominee list is that every movie is so different from the other. Therefore, the race really is a tossup. In the film category, 10 movies explored various topics from slavery ("12 Years a slave"), pirate hijacking ("Captain Phillips"), a failed marriage ("Blue Jasmine") - even an outer space accident ("Gravity"). And the TV category gets even wilder by supporting several new shows audiences might have never heard of like ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"). So what really grabs Hollywood?
"Meryl Streep in August Osage County. She was breathtaking just absolutely mind blowingly gifted," Melissa Rauch of "Big Bang Theory" says. "There were lots of fun moments working with Kate," Sally Hawkins of "Blue Jasmine" says. "I was so surprised I had no idea that this was going to happen so it was really, like, totally amazing to me," Gretha Gerwig of "Francis Ha" says. "The nice thing about these ceremonies is that you get back together with your bunch. I haven't seen Ron in awhile or Chris Hemsworth, Niki, Peter Morgan so it's nice to sit there at a table and drink and eat and celebrate this wonderful moment," Daniel Bruhl of "Rush" says. For film, the winner's list is a sampling of the diversity that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had to vote for. As the international market gets more and more indispensable for American films, getting a Golden Globe recognition means more than just being in the spotlight. "I don't know yet. It's very weird. People, everyone seems very stressed out for my liking right now, but once I sit down I'm gonna have fun," Jemima Kirke of "Girls" says. "I've always wanted to be a showperson in showbusiness and I get to do it and it's sorta incredible. I'm just so grateful and these are the people I've admired my whole life: actors, producers, directors, writers, makeup artists and to be part of them and included in their community is amazing," Gretha Gerwid of "Francis Ha" says. "So much fun. You're surrounded by people you admire and love. So it's just great," Alfonso Cuaron, director of "Gravity", says.
In the TV category, the biggest surprise was Jon Voight for his role in Ray Donovan. "You come together and you see a script and meet all these people and you wonder if you all get along and I must say I am very impressed with each of them. They're terrific. I enjoy going to set everyday with these guys. They're all wonderful actors. They're all disciplined and they're all hungry to do it great so we all come to the set with the same energy. It's wonderful," Voight says. Serving as a constant incentive within the entertainment industry, both domestic and foreign, the Golden Globe Awards also establish favorable relations and cultural ties between foreign countries with the U.S. The after parties are set for all the talent to meet and mingle. How are they going to celebrate? "I'm not going to celebrate anymore than I am now. I'm delighted to be here and that's my attitude. If I win that's great, but everybody here in a way deserves to be winning. So I'm just hoping to have a pleasant time," Jacqueline Bissit of "Dancing on the Edge" says. "In Peter Russo style. Hopefully, on this side of the law though," Corey Stoll of "House of Cards" says. "I'm celebrating either way. I'll maybe drink some champagne," Zooey Deschanel of "New Girl" says. It seems like no matter who takes away the golden globe, everybody is here for a big celebration. As the Golden Globes have proven a good indicator of strong Oscar contenders, the front runners are securing their chances on the road to the Academy Awards 2014. |
