In the first half of this year the number of accidents and consequent deaths in China dropped 3.8 percent and 13.9 percent year on year respectively, but the situation remains serious, a safety official said Tuesday.

Safety rules must be followed strictly to avoid future tragedies, and supervision must be fully carried out in order to protect people's lives, said Yang Dongliang, head of the State Administration of Work Safety, at a national conference on work safety.

About 100,000 road traffic accidents killed 26,000 people in China in the first seven months of the year, according to a statement from the Ministry of Public Security. Meanwhile, 174,000 fires were reported across the country, claiming 1,164 lives.

From January to July, there were 158 boat-related accidents, which rose2.3 percent over the same period last year, resulting in 148 people dead or missing, said Dai Dongchang, chief planner with the Ministry of Transport.

By Aug. 15, special equipment, such as elevators and boilers, killed 102 people in 108 accidents and injured another 101, said Chen Gang, vice director of the General Office of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
