The Ministry of Education will crack down on extra charges for school enrollment, according to a statement posted on the ministry's website on Monday.

The ministry will also make efforts to cut the chain of interests regarding student recruitment, such as advanced math classes that are supposed to make it easier for students to enter school, the statement said.

At a symposium held Monday, Vice Minister of Education Liu Limin urged the establishment of a public supervisory mechanism to ensure fair recruitment in compulsory education.

Liu said multiple means should be established for the public to report existing problems in school enrollment, and the ministry ought to take timely measures to address and handle these issues.

Liu also reiterated that the ministry will further improve the accountability system, impose punishments on those caught violating rules and regulations, and promote the balanced development of compulsory education.
