Songzhuang, in East Beijing, is an area that’s home to many bohemian artists. Nestled among the buildings is one that easily stands out - the "Czech China Contemporary Art Gallery". After years of construction work, the gallery had its opening ceremony on Monday.

The idea to build a gallery dedicated to art from the Czech Republic has been welcomed by both artists, and the Czech Embassy.

And the Czech Ambassador marked the opening in a very Chinese way - cutting the red ribbons.

Libor Secka, Czech Ambassador To China, said, "The Czech culture is very strong culture. We have a lot of thing we can show here in China, and to have such a splendid house for Czech-Chinese cultural dialogue is something we needed. So I hope that this will be a very vivid, active place which will make our people, our artists richer. The programs they have... they have full support of the Czech Embassy in Beijing."

Czech ink painter Jiri Straka has devoted himself to exploring Chinese ink painting with an European angle.... while his wife Qin Kunying is a renowned curator.

She’s the driving force behind the newly-opened gallery.

Qin Kunying, Director, said, Czech-China Contemporary Art Gallery, said, "We spent a lot of time and effort on it -- from inviting famous Czech architect Zdenek Franek to design the building, to checking the quality of every brick. The interior may seem a bit rough at the moment, but soon we’ll have a visiting sculptor from the Czech Republic to give live demonstrations, creating crystal sculptures for us as permanent installations. "

The couple hope to introduce more Czech art projects step by step -- from paintings and sculptures, to photography and even music.

The Czech-China Contemporary Art Gallery is set to give art communication between both countries a strong boost.
