Hong Kong stocks rose 0.93 percent Thursday following rallies on Wall Street. The benchmark Hang Seng index closed up 186.65 points, or 0.93 percent, to end at 20,327.32 points, after trading between a day low of 20,138.02 and a day high of 20,360.48 points. Turnover totaled 52.78 billion HK dollars (about 6.80 billion U. S. dollars) compared with Wednesday's 51.31 billion HK dollars. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 160.78 points, or 1. 53 percent, to close at 10,664.61. All the four sub-indices gained ground. The Finance sub- index was the biggest gainer, rising 1.11 percent, followed by the Commerce & Industry, adding 0.85 percent, the Properties, 0.65 percent, the Utilities, 0.35 percent. Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, gained 0.23 percent to close at 66.5 HK dollars, and its local unit Hang Seng Bank moved up 0.99 percent to 101.6 HK dollars. Bank of East Asia, another Hong Kong's major bank, rose 1.77 percent to 28.75 HK dollars. Local bourse operator Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing added 0.62 percent to 129 HK dollars. Mainland-based financial stocks moved up. China Construction Bank, the country's second largest bank which accounts for the third largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, advanced 2.19 percent to 6.06 HK dollars. ICBC, the world's largest bank by market value, went up 1.82 percent at 5.05 HK dollars. Bank of China rose 1.92 percent at 3.18 HK dollars. Bank of Communications, China's fifth biggest lender measured by assets, gained 1.76 percent to 5.78 HK dollars. Local developers ended mixed. Hang Lung Properties rose 0.35 percent to 28.75 HK dollars. Henderson Land, another major developer in Hong Kong, added 2.34 percent to 43.7 HK dollars, and Cheung Kong Holding, a powerful HK-based developer controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, ended flat at 97.05 HK dollars. As for energy stocks, China's top refiner Sinopec rose 1.10 percent to 8.27 HK dollars. PetroChina, the country's largest oil and gas producer, moved up 1.31 percent to 10.84 HK dollars. BOC Hong Kong, an unit of Bank of China, was the best- performing blue chip in the day, with its shares rising 3.46 percent to 22.45 HK dollars. HK-based Esprit, a clothing retailer which heavily relies on wholesale operations in Europe, was the worst-performing blue chip in the day, with its shares falling 1.73 percent to 15.94 HK dollars.
