A Chinese-language version of the classic musical Mamma Mia! is on stage in the city of Xi'an, hometown of the Terra Cotta Warriors, in northwest China's Shaanxi province. The musical, scheduled to be performed in Xi'an from Friday to Monday, forms part of the province's international music festival, the festival organizers said Saturday in a press release. Shaanxi dialect was also adopted in the musical, winning laughs and standing applause from the audience. Since its debut in Shanghai in July, the Chinese version of Mamma Mia! has attracted 100,000 people to watch in the cities of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, according to the release. Mamma Mia!, a stage musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, tells the tale of a young woman on a quest to discover the identity of her true father. The 10th Shaanxi Xi'an International Music Festival kicked off on Dec. 5, and will last 100 days. Organized by the Musical Hall of Xi'an, the festival will include 30 performances, such as symphony concerts and musicals. |
