World media giants will gather in Beijing for the World Media Summit Presidium Meeting (WMSPM) to discuss the development of international news reporting, cooperation and the system of establishing such cooperation. The summit begins on Tuesday, two years after the first was held here, serving as an effective platform for communication and cooperation for Chinese and international media organizations. Representatives of Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, the BBC, Turner Broadcasting System, Google, Al Jazeera, the New York Times Company will attend the WMSPM, hosted by Xinhua. Currently, as the world situation is changing greatly, the reform of world media order is inevitable. Through the impact of the political, economic and technical developments, the world media are calling for the establishment of a fairer, all-win, inclusive and responsible international media order. It is definitely important to get all media from different countries and regions involved in news reporting in an equal way. The world's multi-polarization, economic globalization and cultural diversity are calling for the media to portray the lives of people of different nations, reveal the tendency of nations' development, and promote comprehensive, objective and accurate news reporting. Of course, significant challenges exist, such as the multivariate demands of news readers, the shock of new media, and media's weaker sense of responsibility. The world media can only tackle such challenges through communication and cooperation, and strengthening the information-sharing progress among themselves and changing the current unbalanced situation by supporting those of weaker status. In a world of variety, differences inevitably exist -- cultural, religious, and the different values of different nations and nationalities -- media organizations need to respect those differences, create dialogue, and have reciprocal cooperation before eradicating the chasms between different civilizations and cultures. The media should also bear responsibility to positively cope with significant issues faced by humans, such as poverty and the deteriorating environment. In fact, Xinhua and other news organizations have been making efforts on common issues. For example, in 2009, more than 1,000 media organizations participated in Global News Day For Children, which revealed the status of children's lives. This year, Xinhua, together with United Nations Development Program (UNDP), initiated a global photo contest, aiming to refocus the world's attention on poverty. The World Media Summit Presidium Meeting not only serves as a platform for media exchanges, but also as a chance for the world to better know the Chinese media. The Chinese media have shown their ever-strongest willingness to strengthen dialogue and enhance cooperation with the world media. As the world experiences rapid development and great change, the world media stand together at a new starting line. We believe by grasping the opportunity and strengthening cooperation, the world media will make new contributions for the peace and prosperity and form an international media order in a fair and rational way. |
