    (Sept 25, 1912---Oct 5, 1996)In 1928, he received the admission of Nankai High School and began to engage himself into the students’ progressive movement. In 1932, he was enrolled in the History Department of Chinghua University and joined the Leftist Federation in the same year, symbolized with his maiden work Mother. He started his novel Horqin Grassland from 1933 and finished it in 1935, which was one of the influential works produced by Northeast writers in 1930s. From 1936 to 1938, he devoted himself into the Anti-Japanese Literature both at Shanghai and Wuhan, which made his literary production increasingly mature and prolific, labeled with a series of short stories with unique features such Land Sea, The Melancholy of Cilu Lake, The Sandstorm Afar as erected his position in Chinese modern literature field. In May of 1938, he held his wedding with Xiao Hong at Wuhan. After Xiao Hong’s death for illness at Hong Kong, he sojourned at Guilin, then drifted himself at Chongqing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, engaging himself in his new works writing. His new publications were novels of The Great River, The Great Epoch, The Tide in Shanghai and Horqin Grassland ( the second part) and many other novellas and short stories, of which The Titbits of A New Metropolis, Ferry of Fengling, Red Lamp, The Red Night and The Fortress carved with Hawks were the excellent influential works. In the eve of the PRC’s foundation, he returned Beijing from Hong Kong. He devoted himself into the life of countryside, factory and army, and based on these life experiences, he produced a lot of essays to eulogize the new life such as The Moergoler River, Wind from Grassland and The Flowerlike Stone from 1950s to early 1960s.In 1960, he remarried himself with Zhong Yaoqun. After the Ten-years’ Disaster, the Cultural Revolution(1966-1976), he dedicated all his efforts to the literary production in the new period with much higher passion and sedulity, thus a series of works were produced such as the essay Memorial for Lao She, the novella Landscape in South of Yangzi River and the saga novel Cao Xueqin which exerted a profound influence most. In 1979, the publication of the first volume of Cao Xueqin received various honors and reputations both at home and abroad. In 1985, he was elected as the vice-chairman of Beijing Writers’ Association, and trustee of China Writers’ Association in 1984. In 1985, the publication of Second Volume of Cao Xueqin(coauthored with his wife Zhong Yaoqun) highlighted China modern literature again. On Oct 5,1996, this Liaoningese, the famous writer who had experienced Chinese modern and contemporary literature history, died of illness in Beijing at the age of 84.
