China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Malawian counterpart, Henry Chimunthu Banda, in Beijing Monday and called for the two nations' parliaments to boost cooperation.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, highlighted the growth of bilateral ties since the two nations forged diplomatic relations more than two years ago.

The implementation of bilateral projects under the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum has brought concrete benefits to both nations and peoples, Wu said.

Wu expressed his appreciation for Malawi's adherence to the one-China policy and Malawi's firm support for China on issues of core national interest.

China respects Malawi's sovereignty and territorial integrity and its choice of national development path, Wu added.

Echoing Wu's views, Banda, speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi, said the establishment of diplomatic relations with China was a common aspiration of the Malawian government, political parties and people.

Malawi treasures its friendship with China and is grateful for China's selfless support for Malawi's national development, Banda said, adding that the facts prove that China is a sincere friend of African countries including Malawi.

Banda expressed his hope his China visit will promote exchange and cooperation between the NPC and the Malawian National Assembly.

He reiterated that Malawi will unswervingly uphold the one-China policy and back China's efforts to achieve peaceful national reunification.

As Wu's guest, Banda led a Malawian parliamentary delegation to China. The delegation arrived in China on Dec. 17. It was Banda's first visit to China as Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi.
