The construction sector in the eurozone fell by 1.8 percent in September and 0.9 percent in the whole European Union (EU), the statistical agency Eurostat said on Wednesday.

The downward figures are the result of the continuous contraction of building construction and civil engineering, the Eurostat said.

The construction sector in the EU has been caught in a slow recession since 2007, as less investment poured into the real estate industry.

Among EU members, Slovenia saw the biggest decrease of 8.6 percent, followed by Italy with 5.4 percent, Sweden 3.2 percent and France 2.3 percent.
