More than 30 scholars and experts took part in a seminar in Nanjing on Tuesday to mark a historical moment in the World Anti-fascist War. On the same day 69 years ago, Japan's surrender to China took place in Nanjing. It is another significant event after Sept. 2 when Japan surrendered to the entire Allied Forces aboard the USS Missouri battleship. "Japan's surrender in Nanjing marks the victory of China's anti-Japanese war as well as the World Anti-fascist War," said Zhu Chengshan, curator of the Nanjing Memorial Hall for Massacre Victims. A total of 47 representatives from U.S., Britain, France, Canada, and other countries witnessed the ceremony, said Tang Zhongnan, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. "It shows international recognition of China's great contribution in the World Anti-fascist War," Tang said. Next year will be the 70th anniversary of victory. Scholars and experts call for the allied countries to hold commemorative activities together. "History should be remembered to maintain long-term peace," Tang said. |
