A KFC outlet on Beijing's fourth ring road got a visit from protestors dressed as two orangutans and a tiger who tried to deliver a letter to its staff warning them that the fast-food giant's packaging is killing the rainforest. KFC and its parent company Yum! Brands are being accused by the environmental group Greenpeace of using paper made from Indonesia's rainforest, and harming endangered wildlife such as the Sumatran tiger. Greenpeace said it conducted tests on KFC packaging in the UK, China and Indonesia and found the presence of rainforest fiber in several batches of the company's paper products. The environmental group said KFC is using packaging made by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), which has been repeatedly criticized for clear-cutting Indonesia's rainforests. "We believe if consumers knew that KFC was contributing to deforestation, they wouldn't stand for it," Yang Jie, a project officer of Greenpeace, told reporters at yesterday's protest. Greenpeace has asked KFC to stop buying paper from APP since 2006, but has never received a reply. The group said yesterday that multinational corporations including Kraft, Adidas, Mattel, Unilever and Nestl茅 have already stopped purchasing paper from APP. Greenpeace claims numerous Chinese food companies including Kungfu, Xiabu Xiabu, Yon Ho, 85C and the bakery Christine are still using packaging that is contributing to deforestation. Greenpeace said APP has promised to only use reforested trees for its pulp since 1990s but has postponed the switch to 2015, according to a report by another environmental group in July 2010. Neither KFC nor Yum! Brands responded to the matter yesterday. The KFC staff refused to accept the letter from the orangutan and the tiger. |
