The courage and quick thinking of a young teacher who saved the lives of two students show how valuable teachers are to society.

Zhang Lili, a 29-year-old Chinese language teacher at No 19 Middle School in Jiamusi, Northeast China's Heilongjiang province, risked her life to save two students from being run over by a school bus early this month.

But in doing so, the vehicle ran over her. Zhang, who is still in critical condition in an intensive care ward, had to have both legs amputated.

Our thoughts are with Zhang. Her bravery and her willingness to risk her life to save others have touched the hearts of many and rekindled faith in our humanity, which had been severely challenged by accidents in which the victims were ignored instead of being helped.

Acceptable behavior used to be based on two elements that seemed to be broadly shared by teachers, parents and society in general good values and social responsibility.

Zhang may be rebuilding our faith in role models and their "domino effect" how one person can inspire others and create great change.

The point is that one does not need to die to be heroic or a role model. He or she can just put their values into practice in real life and behave accordingly.

The accident should also refocus policymakers' attention on school bus safety, this time on the competence of drivers.

Driving a school bus is a huge responsibility, requiring the driver exercise attentiveness and employ safe driving practices.

But it is not only the drivers of school buses that need to exercise care and attention, drivers on both sides of the road should be vigilant and reduce their speed when a school bus is picking up or dropping off the children, because children may cross the road without looking to see what's coming.

Parents and schools should continually educate children about road safety and make sure they know that they should keep alert before choosing the safest place to cross the road.

It is important that this message of traffic safety is conveyed clearly to kids before another tragedy happens.

Finally, although there is no perfect place to put a school bus stop, because it is impossible to eliminate all potential hazards, guidelines and training are still necessary to ensure that the safest, most informed decisions are made when determining where to place a stop.
