Thousands of Michael Jackson's fans gathered at the pop star's mausoleum in Glendale outside Los Angeles on Friday to honor the first anniversary of his death.

Lining in a long queue, fans filed past the singer's final resting place solemnly, some of them wearing Jackson-style gloves, hats and other clothing.

The fans took a lengthy uphill hike to reach the grave, many of them carrying flowers and some weeping.

By Friday evening, between 7,000 and 10,000 people had filed past the signer's grave, according to Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

Access to the mausoleum is restricted, but fans who want to pay respect to Jackson will be permitted to walk in front of the mausoleum and leave flowers in a designated area between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Outside, the crowd was generally peaceful, carrying sunflowers, letters and bouquets. Fans were barred from bringing items such as doves, video cameras, candles, balloons, spinners, statues, posters and incense.

Cemetery officials and Glendale police have made it clear they do not want the event to turn into a public spectacle.

"People like Michael Jackson have contributed so much to this world," said Norman Morris who was displaying an exquisite collage of the late pop icon Michael Jackson's pictures from different times.

For Morris, doing so was not simply an act of art, but a contribution to this world that the King of Pop had contributed to. "Now I want to be part of this world," Morris said. "With my artwork, I hope this is my contribution." Friday's event is part of a series of anniversary activities. Some members of the Jackson family visited the cemetary, while others marked the anniversary in their hometown of Gary, Ind., where the singer's mother unveiled a monument to her son outside the house where he grew up.

In Hollywood, the wax likeness of Jackson was on display for free in the courtyard of Madame Tussauds on Hollywood Boulevard, about 100 feet from Jackson's star on the Walk of Fame.

Another event paying tribute to Jackson is scheduled Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton, near downtown Los Angeles.

"This red-carpet event will be dedicated to the humanitarian efforts of Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time," according to a statement from the Jackson Family Foundation and VoicePlate Productions.

"The vision is to bring together Michael Jackson family members, celebrities, fans, supporters and the community to celebrate and honor his legacy. We have all shared in Michael's message, and now we encourage all of you the world over to join us in continuing to spotlight Michael's endeavors by making a conscious effort to help save our planet."

The event will also serve as the premiere release of the book "Never Can Say Goodbye," written by Jackson's mother Katherine, according to the statement.

According to VoicePlate, a portion of the proceeds from Saturday 's event will be presented to some of Jackson's favorite charities.

"I know that Michael would be very honored and very pleased that his fans all over the world are coming together to celebrate his life," Katherine said in a video posted on YouTube.

"And I'd also like to thank friends all over the world for the love and support that they have given me and my family this last year," she said. "Thank you very much, we all love you. And if Michael was here, he would say, I love you more."

Michael Jackson died June 25, 2009. He was found unconscious at his rented Holmby Hills estate in Los Angeles, where he was staying while preparing for a series of concerts in London. He was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The coroner's office determined that the 50-year-old singer died of propofol intoxication, a powerful sedative, prescribed by his personal physician, Conrad Murray, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is awaiting trial.

Jackson's death shocked the world and prompted a media frenzy. Thousands of fans swarmed his memorial service at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Weeks later, he was laid to rest at the Glendale cemetery.

As the first anniversary of Jackson's death was marked, Jackson' s father, Joe, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Murray, who admitted giving the singer the powerful sedative propofol.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleges that Murray "began a course of medication treatments for Michael Jackson which was below the standard of care and ultimately resulted in Jackson's over-medication and death."

According to the lawsuit, Murray withheld information from paramedics that may have helped them revive the unconscious singer, who used propofol to sleep. It also alleges Murray tried to clean up or hide evidence relevant to the death.

Joe did not name AEG, the entertainment company of the singer's comeback tour in London. However, the patriarch of the Jackson family, is reportedly wanting to hold the firm partially liable for his son's death, because it was paying Murray to take care of the star.
