Shang Wenjie's new photo shoots for "Elle" magazine

She's recently been referred to as an attention-seeking follower of Lady Gaga for her eye-popping outfits, but she shrugs off the criticism of her outrageous style. However people may judge her, Shang Wenjie is sticking with her breakout glam-gothic makeover and shows no sign of quitting.

"I just wanna make the job more fun, so that I can keep the passion for my work," the singer explained.

Shang's drastic turnaround can be traced back to her performance at the world premiere of the film "The Message" on September 22, 2009. When she came into the spotlight in dark blue eye shadow that covered nearly one-third of her face and with a huge black rose pinned in her hair, it was a declaration of "goodbye girl next door, hello glam diva."

Her new style became better known last November, when she sported an array of visually challenging outfits at her solo concert in Beijing.

"There's no black and white in fashion.... I don't think that criticism of my style should be called 'negative reports,'" she said in response to the mounting commentary on her avant-garde fashion.

"Compared with the pre-meditated newsmakers in this industry, I don't feel guilty for my way of catching eyes with cutting-edge trends and style," Shang said, defending her career strategy.

Shang Wenjie, 28, was the champion of Hunan TV's 2006 "Super Girl" talent show. She ended her career as a French translator afterwards and has released three albums so far.
