Winch Road The famous Dongninag Fortress is around 20-minutes drive from Dongning County, Heilongjiang Province. Dongning Fortress is the largest strategic fort in Asia and it is called the oriental “Maginot line”. It is mainly formed by 3 front-line eternal and firm forts, comprehensive transportation warehouses, the eternal and firm underground ammunition depots, arsenals and field defense works. It is the ending place of World War II. The large project is the firmest and the most complete strategic fort in fort ruins ever constructed. Dongning Xunshan Underground Fortress is the only one which is opened to the public. The fortress is built at the top of the mountain while the structure is 3 vertical and 3 horizontal. There are 7000 square meters of defense work underground, field defense works and forts underground which are all connected with other forts underground. The fortress is around 2 kilometers long and is built by reinforced concrete. There are command posts, communication rooms, ammunition depots, barbettes, clinics, power plants, kitchens, water storage pools, toilets and ventilation holes. There are 4 outside exits. There are observation posts, bunkers, dormitories for military dogs and vertical pits. It can accommodate 3000 soldiers. The defense ability of the Japanese fortress that was built is strong---anti-bomb, waterproof, anti fire and anti gas proof. Dongning fortress construction started from June, 1934 until 1944 where most of it was completed. More than 170 thousand laborers were involved in this construction. Most of the laborers were tortured to death. A complete labor grave ruin was left near the fortress with an area of more than 20 thousand square meters. There are around 8000 Chinese corpses in around 500 graves. There are about 10 holes like this in Dongning.
