A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday urged central and state institutions to curb the practice of "formalities for formalities' sake" so as to alleviate burdens on primary-level authorities.

Ding Xuexiang, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the working committee for central and state organs, made the remarks when presiding over a meeting on the issue.

Central and state institutions should be the first to take actions against the practice of "formalities for formalities' sake," Ding said.

He called for thorough inspections against such practices and targeted measures to address them, stressing that unnecessary meetings and documents must be cut.

Ding also demanded improved supervision over the practice of "formalities for formalities' sake" and a long-term mechanism to ensure that the measures curbing such practices are fully carried out.
