Taiwan shares plunged 6.31 percent to close at 9,806.11 Thursday amid declines on U.S. markets overnight.

The benchmark weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, or the TAIEX, opened sharply lower Thursday morning. It tumbled below the 10,000-point mark within two minutes and continued the downward trend, falling more than 600 points in the mid-morning session.

It closed down 660.72 points, or 6.31 percent, at 9,806.11 with a turnover of 205.33 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 6.6 billion U.S. dollars).
