Chinese stocks closed lower Thursday with the plastic industry leading the decline. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged down 0.54 percent to close at 2,791.77 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.02 percent lower to end at 8,334.75 points. Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 286.03 billion yuan (about 41.61 billion U.S. dollars), down from 310.37 billion yuan the previous trading day. The plastic sector dropped the most on Thursday, with the sub-index down 2.68 percent. Guangdong Silver Age Sci & Tech Co., Ltd lost 9.94 percent to close at 7.34 yuan per share. Home appliances and electronic industries were also among the losers, with the sub-indices down 2.33 percent and 2.27 percent, respectively. Bucking the downward trend, the biomedical industry gained 0.16 percent. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.44 percent to close at 1,400.36 points. |
