Chinese stocks closed higher Tuesday with cement and building materials industries leading the rally. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.82 percent to close at 2,699.95. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.67 percent higher to end at 8,133.22. Total turnover on the two stock exchanges stood at 253.66 billion yuan (36.98 billion U.S. dollars), up from 206.78 billion yuan the previous trading day. The cement sector rose the most, with the sub-index up 4.04 percent. Gansu Qilianshan Cement Group went up 9.66 percent to close at 7.49 yuan. The building materials and steel sectors also saw strong performance, with the sub-indices up 3.18 percent and 3.08 percent, respectively. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, gained 2.04 percent to close at 1,377.3. Bucking the upward trend, the oil industry lost 0.1 percent. |
