Typhoon Rumbia brought heavy rains to China's coastal provinces of Shandong and Liaoning, forcing the evacuation of 140,000 people and damaging crops and houses.

The average precipitation in the eastern province of Shandong had reached 132.4 mm by Monday morning, with rainfalls in cities of Dongying, Tai'an and Heze exceeding 200 mm.

A total of 102,800 people in Shandong were displaced and 261,400 hectares of crops were damaged, said the provincial department of civil affairs.

Rainstorms also toppled 962 houses and severely damaged 2,214 more. The direct economic losses totaled 3.96 billion yuan (578 million U.S. dollars).

In the northeastern province of Liaoning, rainstorms triggered by the 18th typhoon this year had forced the evacuation of 37,874 residents by 11 a.m. Monday.

Dalian was the worst-hit region with 20 meteorological stations receiving precipitation between 100 mm and 250 mm.

The Liaoning provincial headquarters of flood control and drought relief has sent working teams to four cities, including Dalian, to coordinate relief efforts.

Torrential rains are forecast to last until Tuesday morning throughout Liaoning.
