Chinese stocks closed mixed on Tuesday after drastic fluctuations as market sentiment remained cautious. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed up 0.26 percent at 2,876.4 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.03 percent lower at 9,178.78 points. Combined turnover stood at 273.1 billion yuan (about 40.1 billion U.S. dollars). Data on Tuesday showed the purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector came in at 51.2 this month, down from 51.5 in June. Activities of the country's non-manufacturing sector also expanded at a slower pace in July, with its PMI standing at 54, compared with 55 in June. Though the PMI for both sectors dropped compared with the previous month, they still pointed to steady expansion as a reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below reflects contraction. Banking shares pulled up in the afternoon session, extending the strength to securities and insurance sectors. Wujiang Rural Commercial Bank surged 5.52 percent to close at 6.69 yuan per share, while Bank of Ningbo went up 1.93 percent to end at 17.43 yuan. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, was up 0.1 percent to close at 1,561.26 points Tuesday. |
