China's cyberspace regulators have ordered five companies to carry out corrective measures over advertisements that showed disrespect for war heroes.

Directed by the Cyberspace Administration of China, internet regulators and the industry and commerce administration of Beijing held talks on June 30 with the companies, asking them to clean up content that insults heroes and martyrs.

The move comes after Douyin, a popular Chinese short video app under ByteDance, recently placed an advertisement on Chinese search engine Sogou that was said to insult Qiu Shaoyun, a war hero who burned to death in the war to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea (1950-1953).

Besides Douyin and Sogou, three other companies in the advertising and media production sectors were also rebuked.

The companies were also asked to educate their employees and improve their supervision over advertisement content.

In response to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the Beijing Administration of Industry and Commerce is probing the five companies, and their punishments will be published.
