China's key stock index closed lower for the fourth straight day on Monday as strong performance by liquor producers failed to lift market sentiment. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.2 percent to close at 3,135.08 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.17 percent higher at 10,465.54 points. Combined turnover totaled 398.2 billion yuan (about 62.2 billion U.S. dollars). Hainan-related companies saw shares drop on Monday as enthusiasm faded over the southernmost island's latest plan to attract investment. Hainan Dadonghai Tourism Centre went down 4.02 percent to end the day at 12.66 yuan per share, while Hainan Strait Shipping Co. Ltd. closed 5.82 percent lower at 28.66 yuan. Bucking the trend, liquor producers rallied, with shares of Gujing Group surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 83.57 yuan. The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.42 percent to close at 1,796.91 points Monday. |
