A symposium to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the publication of the first Chinese translation of "Red Star over China" was held in Beijing on Tuesday. The book is an account of the battle, production and life of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in its northwest revolutionary base. It was written by American journalist Edgar Snow, who spent years in China and interviewed many then CPC leaders including Mao Zedong. Participants in the symposium, including representatives of publishing industry, scholars and experts, discussed why the book has been so popular over the years and the significance of the book in current times. "Red Star over China" was first published in the United Kingdom in 1937 before its Chinese version was published in Shanghai one year later. A recent Chinese translation was published by the People's Literature Publishing House in 2016, and 3 million copies have been sold. The book has been translated into nearly 20 languages and tens of millions of copies have been sold worldwide. |
