An airport in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, has done away with paper boarding passes and now requires passengers to scan their mobile phones to board domestic flights.

Passengers at Xinzheng International Airport can check in on the airport's WeChat account or the mobile application "Umetrip" and receive a QR code. With the code and their ID card, they can board their plane, according to the airport.

The QR code boarding service is only available to domestic passengers leaving Zhengzhou and travelling without checked luggage, it said.

On Wednesday, a facial recognition system was also put into use for security checks at the airport. The system takes a picture of each passenger and compares it with the national ID card database. The process takes just two seconds per person.

As Chinese have higher disposable incomes and can choose fly over taking long distance trains, more airports are offering smart services to streamline the boarding process and improve the passenger experience.

Previously, airports in Changsha, Hunan Province and Xianyang, Shaanxi Province got rid of paper boarding passes and required passengers to scan their phones to board their flight.
