The embankment of a reservoir in northwest China's Shaanxi Province was breached on Wednesday, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.

Water burst out of the Qingshuigou Reservoir, a drinking water source for 45,000 residents in the county seat of Zizhou, at 1:50 p.m., disrupting the water supply, according to the local publicity department.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the reservoir water had passed along the Dali River with no casualties reported.

The small reservoir had a storage capacity of 370,000 cubic meters.

Torrential rain has battered the city of Yulin since Tuesday evening with disruptions to power supplies, telecommunication and the Internet.

In the worst-hit Suide and Zizhou counties, precipitation from 8 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday exceeded 200 millimeters, according to the provincial flood control headquarters.

In Zizhou, more than 20,000 residents living in low-lying areas were relocated to two schools. Two water trucks are supplying emergency water supplies to the county seat.

The rain also flooded sections of two railway lines, forcing 91 train services to be canceled.

A total of 1,350 rescuers have been sent to combat the floods and handle the aftermath. The city government has allocated 25 million yuan (3.7 million U.S. dollars) in disaster relief.
