The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced Monday that in the first half of this year, police nationwide solved over 3,500 cases of food safety-related crimes. The ministry itself oversaw the investigation of more than 80 major cases, over 40 percent of which involved the Internet, the MPS said in a statement. Police also improved cooperation with e-commerce platforms such as Alibaba, it said. Measures to address the root causes of problems such as "gutter oil" were stepped up. The ministry also published five typical cases, including one in which the suspects were found to have added powdered poppy capsules, banned under the country's narcotics regulation, into seasonings sold online. In another case that involved at least 20 million yuan (2.9 million U.S. dollars), 21 suspects were arrested for producing and selling fake health food products. |
