Draft law aims to extend functions of public libraries

Lawmakers began reviewing a draft law on public libraries on Thursday to extend their functions as gateways to knowledge and culture.

The draft law suggests that public libraries should have juvenile and children's reading areas, with instructors guiding and educating minors.

It also says that public libraries should provide free services such as document data inquiries and lending, and organize public lectures, training and exhibitions.

China has more than 3,100 government-run libraries, and around 50 public libraries set up by citizens, enterprises and public institutions, society groups and other organizations, said Chinese Culture Minister Luo Shugang.

The draft law was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for a first reading at the start of its bi-monthly session.
