The Chinese technology giant Huawei has announced plans to sell its new smartphone product in Japan, according to the Japanese financial media Nikkei.

While popular in underdeveloped and developing countries, Huawei has so far been unable to make a breakthrough in Japan's smartphone market, with Japanese consumers preferring brands such as Apple and Sony.

It's reported Huawei also believes Japan is a potentially lucrative market for "SIM free" phones which would be open to all telecom operators and users.

The "NOVA", Huawei's new product, has added a new fill-in light function, to appeal to users who like taking selfies.

The edge of the screen has also been flattened, which would make the model appear less bulky.

The price of the new phone will reportedly be 38,000 Japanese yen, that's about 336 US dollars.
