Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has assured South Africans that Beijing will work harder to boost cooperation with the continent as outlined in the Johannesburg Summit two years ago.

South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was in Beijing on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations and promote inclusive and balanced globalisation efforts as part of BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa] initiatives.

The BRICS 9th Summit, which is scheduled to be held in the resort city of Xiamen in east China’s Fujian Province in September, will focus on strengthening global governance.

The Summit will be held under the theme “BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future” and looks to complete the initiatives started at the Goa Summit last year.

Key issues will be furthering study on finalising plans to establish an independent ratings agency which will appeal more to developing nations looking for fair criteria and assessments. “Particularly on issues of major concerns and concerning their core interests, the two countries understand and firmly support each other, incessantly deepening their strategic partnership,” Wang said.

For her part, Nkoana-Mashabane said that South Africa valued its strategic partnership with China and wanted to “strengthen coordination in regional and international cooperation mechanisms including the BRICS”.

Nkoana -Mashabane also declared her weekend visit to China a “success”. China is currently involved in several important development projects in South Africa, the department of international relations and co-operation said.

The department also revealed that Nkoana-Mashabane discussed the status of BRICS projects and took stock of progress made as the co-chairs of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC).
