Instead of pointing fingers at Chinese tourists, there are some reasonable explanations for the amount of packing paper and other rubbish at Jeju International Airport, the People's Daily said.

According to the report, the time crunch for boarding, the unreasonable layout of the airport lounge, and shopping and goods collection rules may contribute to passengers leaving trash.

A South Korean media outlet showed pictures of the departure lounge at Jeju International Airport with rubbish piled everywhere. It blamed Chinese passengers and tourists for littering -- mostly packaging from goods purchased -- throughout the airport.

People's Daily said the blame is unfair. According to the airport's rules, passengers must complete all boarding procedures, including checking in, security inspection, collecting duty-free goods and boarding airplanes, within two hours, and each of these procedures may require them to queue and wait.

In addition, tourists can only take away Korean brand goods they buy in duty-free shops on Cheju Island after payment. However, duty-free goods with other international brands cannot be collected until passengers finish security inspection at the airport.

Many passengers have to remove packaging in the boarding area and stuff goods inside their suitcases before they run to the ferry buses and board the planes. If they do not hurry, passengers may miss their flights.

The airport did not provide enough dustbins for this discarded packaging, the paper said.

Jeju Island in South Korea is a hot destination for Chinese tourists. The People's Daily called for tourists to protect the environment and take away their rubbish. In addition, an improvement in infrastructure and high-quality public services are also important for the development of the tourism industry, it said.
