[File photo: VCG] Several main subway stations in Shanghai were equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) after Spring Festival, reported by thepaper.cn on Tuesday. Currently, over 1,000 AEDs are estimated to be available in transport hubs and other places in Shanghai. An AED is a portable electronic device that allows the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. When the device is used immediately after a cardiac incident, during the so-called "four golden minutes," survival rates for patients improve significantly. Statistics show that 9 million cases of cardiac-related sudden deaths happen globally every year, and 544,000 of them are from China, the highest in the world. Among them, 15 percent of the sudden deaths happen in public places. Lu Le, the founder and CEO of sos919.com, a first aid organization in Shanghai, said over 80 percent of cardiac sudden deaths happen outside hospitals, and if doctors are not available on the spot, patients in public spaces can be saved by AEDs. The rate of being saved can surpass 60 percent if treatment is received within four minutes, said Lu. Lu emphasized that though the number of AEDs is increasing in public places, ordinary people do not have enough knowledge on the use of AEDs. Many AEDs in Shanghai are labeled with "medical staff only or people who have AED usage training only." Lu said such warnings are necessary, because misuse will cause severe harm. However, mastering the proper use of the device is not difficult. According to Lu, ordinary people can become adept at using AEDs after a few hours of training. Lu also said that the maintenance of AEDs in public places should be improved. |
