Beijing is planning to provide smaller public rental houses from this year.

According to latest guidelines released by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the total usable floor area could vary from 15 to 22 square meters, and include a bedroom, kitchen and a toilet, reports the Xinhua news agency.

The aim is to provide a wider variety of public renting houses for tenants to choose from.

Under the old rules, the usable floor area of each public rental home was no less than 22 square meters, and the gross floor area was no more than 60 square meters, with the majority of such houses being around 40 square meters.

New designs and technologies will be used in the smaller public houses to meet the basic needs of the tenants, such as cooking, washing clothes and taking a shower.

The guidelines also demand such houses be equipped with basic urban infrastructure facilities, for example, transportation and access to parking.

To meet the needs of low and moderate-income families and stabilize the housing market, China embarked on the Public Rental Housing program at a state level in 2009.
