[File photo: The Beijing News] The Beijing police are investigating dozens of sex trade suspects involved in last year's nightclub shutdown cases after they were arrested in late January, announced the police's official Weibo account on Tuesday. A total of 77 suspects were arrested on January 26 after procuratorial supervision, and following lawsuits will be conducted according to law, said the announcement. Three nightclubs in Beijing were sealed off, after hundreds of their employees were detained on prostitution charges last December. The arrests came as part of the city's efforts to clean up its underground sex industry. One of the clubs called Baoli attracted special attention as it was located in Poly Plaza, a landmark building owned by a State-run conglomerate Poly Group. The Poly Group later accused the club of infringing on its trademark in a statement. According to earlier media reports, Baoli had been marketing itself as an upgraded version of the prominent nightclub Tianshang Renjian, which was shut down in 2010 also due to its escort services. The incident is the latest high-profile case involving prostitution. Last May, two people were sentenced to life in prison for running a gambling and prostitution ring at a nightclub in central China's Zhengzhou city, with another 85 people also jailed, China Daily reported. It said that more than 2,900 women had provided sexual services before the club was raided and ordered to close in November 2013. A total of 152 police officers were also punished for covering up the ring and more than 8 million yuan in bribes was seized, said the report. |
