A man from Shaanxi was shocked to learn that the "nutcracker" he has been using for the last 25 years was actually an old hand grenade.

The man surnamed Ran from Ankang city told local reporters that he had been using the device regularly for the past 25 years to crack open walnuts. However, earlier this month, he decided to stop using it after reading a police safety leaflet about explosives that he realized possessed a forbidden explosive, and had been banging it against things for years.

He has since handed the grenade over to police who are examining the device to find out whether it is still capable of exploding. It does not have a pin and was likely manufactured back in the 1960s.

Grenades usually explode when the safety lever is released and the object is thrown away. As it rotates, it detonates the primer and ignites the fuse before burning down to the detonator.

People have been commenting on social media site Weibo about the man's lucky escape.

One user wrote: "Why would a friend gift him a bomb?"

Another said: "It's more stable than a Samsung phone."

Ran said that he received the "nutcracker" as a "gift" back in 1991, though he didn't say what kind "friend" had given him the device.

It's not sure what Ran will use to crack open walnuts now...
