[Photo: Baidu] Chinese police have arrested three people who stole and traded private information for as little as 200 yuan (28.75 USD) per record. Insiders at banks, telecommunications, and other industries have been accused of stealing the personal information of clients and giving it to partners who would sell the information, said the Chinese Public Security Ministry. The investigation is ongoing. The case has attracted much attention in China. Nanfang Metropolis Daily reported on Dec 8 that hotel records, personal assets, airline records, criminal records, rental records and other documents were easily made available if sellers were found. The price for single record was as little as 200 yuan. The Chinese Ministry of Public Security stated that it started a 6-month action in May to mitigate personal information crimes. More than 4,200 people have been caught stealing and trading the private information of Chinese citizens in 2016. The suspects include 390 insiders from about 40 sectors such as banking, education, telecommunications, and securities, as well as nearly 100 professional hackers, the ministry said. They are alleged to have been involved in more than 1,800 criminal cases. The action has been extended until the end of 2017. |
