[Photo: china.com] The chieftain of Lagos, a Nigerian port city has recently celebrated his 15th anniversary in the position. This chieftain is no ordinary African chief, but Hu Jieguo, a 68-year-old Chinese man, the Guangzhou Daily reported. Hu became an ambassador of Sino-Nigerian friendship and won much respect from the Nigerian locals after spending 30 years there. Born in 1948 in Shanghai, Hu Jieguo firstly became a middle school English teacher. When his father wanted him to help take over his textile business in Nigeria, Hu decided he would make the move. In a turn of events, Hu Jieguo decided instead to study hotel management. So began his career in hotel management, he invested in building the 6-storey Golden Gate Hotel in the 1990's, a place that became one of the most luxurious hotels in Africa serving Chinese food to locals and government officials in Nigeria. Hu Jieguo also extended his business into construction. In 1999, he helped construct four of the best equipped schools in Nigeria, each of them boasted of rooms with fluorescent lights, electric fans and special wooden shutters. As he was a teacher before, he placed great value on education and invested and spent one year and a half building the schools. The act was recognized by the President of Nigeria, who attended the opening ceremony. In 2001, Hu Jieguo was crowned as the chieftain of Lagos for his outstanding contribution to local community and the Chinese-African relationship. It also made him the first Chinese chieftain in Africa, a historic event in both Nigerian and African history. After serving as the chieftain for 15 years, Hu has become a well-known figure among thousands of overseas Chinese in Nigeria. Hu said he is extremely proud of his work in bringing China and Africa closer together and encouraging more Chinese businessmen further partnership and help the locals. |
