Beijing will build 5 ventilation corridors linking its suburbs and central areas, in a bid to improve air quality in the Chinese capital.

The ventilation corridors will mainly consist of main roads, parks, city green belts, and low buildings.

They will lead natural winds from suburbs into the city center, to help ease heavy air pollution.

City officials also aim to build a network of these urban ventilation corridors in the future.

Suburban authorities have promised to improve urban planning for the sake of air quality, with measures such as limiting the construction of skyscrapers to let the winds go through.

Beijing has been actively working to improve its air quality.

The city said earlier this month that it will eliminate the use of coal in homes and factories in seven districts and replace it with clean energy.

335 heavily polluted factories have also been closed or moved out of the city since the start of this year.

Higher standards on gas and diesel were also introduced this year.

These measures seem to be working, as official surveys show that Beijing saw 10 more days of blue skies this year compared with last year.
