The breach was found by law enforcement agencies, which provided the company with data files that were suspected as being user data. After analyzing the data with the assistance of outside forensic experts, Yahoo believes that the data was stolen by an unauthorized third party in August 2013. According to the company, the stolen information did not include passwords in clear text, payment card data, or bank account information, but may have included some personal details or encryption information. The company acknowledged that it is not able to identify the intrusion associated with the theft so far. |
