![]() Personal information stolen [Photo: Nanfang Metropolis Daily] Eleven people were arrested for hacking into websites and stealing over 600 million pieces of personal information, stated police in Dangyang of central China's Hubei province on Monday. The hackers made over 10 million RMB (1.4 million USD) for the information, selling at prices between 1-10 cents a piece. In May, Tian was reported to the police that she was involved in fraud at home. Soon police officers arrrived at Tian's home and discovered another three young women who were hired to call investors around China to do serve information counsels. Police officers found that since late 2015, the four women had been buying 93 thousand pieces of personal information, including names, phone numbers and IDs in total. Then Tian and her workmates would call the information owners and try to sell them stocks. Tian was just at the beginning of the crime line. After four months, the police arrested another seven worked on stealing and selling the information in Sichuan, Yunnan, Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces, as well as Shanghai. The police said that more than 600 million pieces of information were discovered throughout the criminals' laptops, hard discs, cell phones and other electronics. Nanfang Metropolis Daily reported that hotel records, personal assets, airline records, departure and arrival records, criminal records, renting records and other records could be easily available if sellers were found. The price was dozens of dollars a record. Personal location could also be found if a cell phone number was offered. If a person was living in a hotel, the information of who was with the person was also for sale. The illegal sellers even had third party guarantee platforms to make sure their customers could get the information when money was paid. Police in China have been working on such information crimes. |
