A court in Hong Kong has rejected the appeal of two lawmakers-elect, ensuring they will not be allowed to sit in the city's legislature. In issuing its ruling, the courts have upheld a previous ruling which has disqualified them from office. The two lawmakers-elect have been banned from office after they used derogatory and insulting language against China during their initial swearing-in ceremony in early October. Following the stunt, the National People's Congress issued an interpretation of Hong Kong's Basic Law connected to the rules surrounding oath-taking by Hong Kong lawmakers. The two appealed the ruling. However, Hong Kong's High Court ruled earlier this month that they will not be allowed to take office. |
