Remain which may have belonged to a Chinese geologist who allegedly went missing in the 1960s, have been found in Mangya town in northwest China's Qinghai province.

They were found by stone collectors on a beach about 100 meters away from a road leading to Lop Nur, a former salt lake in Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region.

When he died, he was wearing a blue coat, cotton pants and yellow leather shoes, and was carrying a yellow bag. Inside the bag they found a scrap of newspaper dated September 13 1960; some letters between someone called Deng Guangxue and Li Zhonghua; a torch; a pair of goggles and a pair of socks.

Based on the evidence, the police believe the remains belonged to Deng Guangxue, who they think may still have relatives and friends in Yilong town or Bazhong city of Sichuan province.

The police have started looking for people who may have known him, in order to prove his identity, but asyet they have made no progress.

The region where Deng's remains were found is regarded as a no man's land full of mysteries. The hostile environment in Lop Nur has claimed the lives of many archeologists.

A number of archaeological sites have been found around or near the Lop Nur region. These early settlements are associated with an ancient people of Indo-European origin.
