Sounds fun, but there's a serious side to it too. The aim is to cultivate the next generation oceanographers.The course at Xiamen University caught the attention of netizens after details were published on the university's official Weibo account. ![]() Students practice diving skills in a swimming pool. [Photo: Wechat account of Xiamen University] The University's College of Ocean and Earth Sciences for Seafloor Investigations started offering the optional diving lessons in 2014. Two diving classes are made available each term, each having space for 20 students. Two teachers have been assigned to the job, with so far 200 students making the grade.The subject is reportedly incredibly popular, and the places are snapped up "within seconds". ![]() Students practice diving skills in a swimming pool. [Photo: Wechat account of Xiamen University] "In the first few lessons, I spent 20 minutes putting on the gear," said one student, "the diving gear is tight and makes you feel too hot, and the scuba tank weighs about 30 kg… however, I am still thankful for them.""When we asked the teacher which set of skills were most important, he simply replied: 'all of them'," another student said. ![]() Students practice diving skills.
