Chinese authorities have confirmed the country's coast guards have rescued two Philippine fishermen in waters off Huangyan Island in the South China Sea.

The two rescued were among five Philippine fishermen the Philippine coast guards said went missing when fishing in the water area.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Chinese authorities have attached high importance after the Philippines requested a coordinated rescue operation.

"The Chinese side has given high priority to the request and has sent ships to join the search in the area. We've confirmed with Chinese coast guards that Chinese ships have rescued two Philippine fishermen and are trying to verify their identities."

The spokesman said the Chinese rescue operation will continue.
