China, U.S. to discuss law enforcement cooperation

Senior Chinese and U.S. diplomats and security officials will discuss law enforcement cooperation in Beijing next week.

China and the United States will outline priorities for cooperation at the 14th meeting of the China-U.S. Joint Liaison Group (JLG) on Law Enforcement Cooperation from Nov. 21 to 22, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told a regular news briefing Tuesday.

"China looks to work with the United States to enhance mutual trust, expand consensus and deepen cooperation," Geng said.

JLG, established in 1998, is a major channel for China-U.S. law enforcement cooperation. It involves the foreign ministries, security departments, justice departments and others.

The United States is a major destination for corrupt Chinese officials and economic fugitives. Through the JLG, China has worked closely with the United States to apprehend and extradite them.

Yang Xiuzhu, former vice mayor of Wenzhou suspected of embezzlement, is in U.S. custody with China urging her repatriation.

Some "most wanted" fugitives were repatriated to China in 2015, including Yang Jinjun and Kuang Wanfang. Wang Guoqiang, former Party chief of Fengcheng city in Liaoning Province and Huang Yurong, former Party chief of Henan Provincial Highway Administration turned themselves in.
