Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to begin a three-nation Latin American tour on Thursday, with Ecuador being his first stop.

The trip marks the first time for a Chinese head of state to visit Ecuador, which Chinese diplomats believe is a milestone for building strategic bilateral ties with the country.

In an exclusive interview with CRI, the Chinese ambassador to Ecuador Wang Yulin, says that China and Ecuador have complementary advantages which make the two, natural partners for cooperation.

"China and Ecuador are both developing countries with complementary economic relations. While Chinese enterprises have advantages in capital and technology, Ecuador is rich in energy and resources. When China is going through structural reform and economic transition, Ecuador is adjusting its own industrial structure with more investments in technology. If the two countries can be strategically linked together, there will be great potential for cooperation in various fields."

Xi Jinping met with President Rafael Correa of Ecuador in January last year in Beijing, where the two heads of state announced the establishment of a China-Ecuador strategic partnership.

Ambassador Wang said Xi's trip to Ecuador will further push bilateral ties to a new level, as there will be more cooperation projects between the two countries.

Currently, over 90 Chinese enterprises run businesses in Ecuador. Most of them are involved in energy related infrastructure construction, and resource exploitation such as petroleum and minerals.

After Ecuador, Xi is expected to visit Peru and Chile.
